Kerry Skarbakka’s images picture a world full of physical and emotional dangers. His web site refers to German philosopher Martin Heidegger, who described human existence as a process of perpetual falling. This creates the framework for much of the falling/tripping photographs in his series The Struggle to Right Oneself, for which Kerry has become known.
The image Studio was recently featured on the cover of a deluxe edition DVD/CD package titled Photography Now: one hundred portfolios. It was produced at Wright State University Art Galleries in Ohio, and is “an international survey featuring 1,200 photographs and audio commentary.”
Kerry has shown his photographs internationally and has been acknowledged through numerous awards and grants, including a Creative Capital Foundation Grant in 2005. He has been featured in art magazines such as Aperture, Direct Art Magazine, Zoom International (Italy), Focus Magazine (Belgium), ArtReview International (UK), and more. He received his MFA at Columbia College, Chicago. His photographs can be viewed at www.skarbakka.com.
Skarbakka participated in Light Work’s Artist-in-Residence program in July 2006. An exhibition of his Fluid series is on view at Lawrimore Project in Seattle, and can be seen at www.lawrimoreproject.com.
